A vServer is a virtualized server, also named VPS – Virtual Private Server. But what is “virtualization”?

On a hardware node there is a virtualization software installed like Virtuozzo. This software creates isolated containers on a single physical server and a single Operating System instance. Those containers act like a single server, but they share the ressources like memory, disk space and power. The memory and disk space is assigned and restricted to each VPS Server. Each container can have its own Operation System.

A VPS server is like a dedicated server but it is available for a lower price, because it shares the hardware. It is also more flexible, because it can be easily migrated from one hardware node to another.

What about the classical web hosting?

On a web hosting environment all web sites are hosted on one Operating System. All sites on the server share memory and disk space. At emerion this is not a single server, the web hosting system is a load balanced server cluster to ensure reliability and performance. Due to this high flexibility unix administration knowledge is necessary, because due to mistakes in the configuration the whole server could be out of service easily. Maintenance and setup is much more time consuming than with the classical web hosting.
